What is the difference between Folic Acid and Folate?
Folic acid and folate are both forms of vitamin B9.
Folate is the naturally occurring form of vitamin B9 found in foods. It is present in leafy greens, fruits, beans, and fortified foods. Folate is a generic term that refers to various tetrahydrofolate derivatives naturally present in food.
Folic Acid is the synthetic form of vitamin B9. It is commonly found in dietary supplements and fortified foods, such as cereals and bread. Folic acid is not found naturally in foods.
Does folic acid or folate absorb better?
Folate from food is absorbed in the jejunum (a part of the small intestine) and is converted into its active form by enzymes in the digestive tract and liver. Because it is already in a form that is closer to the biologically active state, it is more directly usable by the body. Folic acid is absorbed in the intestine and converted into dihydrofolate (DHF) and then to tetrahydrofolate (THF) in the liver. The conversion process of folic acid can be slower and may not be completely efficient in all individuals, leading to unmetabolized folic acid circulating in the bloodstream, particularly when intake is high.
How to use:
Take one capsule daily, preferably with food. Best to take in the morning.
