Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that has a wide variety of functions in the body, and is sometimes called the ‘happy’ chemical. The scientific name for serotonin is 5-hydroxytryptamine, or 5-HTP.
5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is the precursor to serotonin, and is not usually sourced from the diet, but is made by the body from the amino acid tryptophan, where it is then changed into serotonin.
Serotonin is what helps to control our mood, sleeping patterns and appetite, among other functions. Nature’s Bounty® Bedtime balance food supplement contains a 50 mg dose of 5-HTP along with vitamins B3 (niacin) and B6 to support mental balance and nervous system functions.
